How Our Newsletter Playlists Are Put Together

Every playlist that goes out with the newsletter starts with a simple question: what have we actually been listening to in the office, on the Métro and at shows around Paris? Rather than chasing algorithmic charts, we build each selection by hand, pairing tracks that connect to the pieces we have just published. If a long read in our Features section explores a particular scene or era, the playlist will usually include a few of the records that shaped it, alongside newer artists who carry the same ideas forward.

Sequencing matters

We treat a playlist the way an album is treated: it should have an opening that pulls you in, a middle that takes a few risks and an ending that leaves you wanting to press play again. That means mixing tempos and textures, letting a quiet track breathe after a dense one, and avoiding three songs in a row that sound alike. A good sequence makes unfamiliar music easier to love, because each song is heard in a context that flatters it.

Getting the most out of each list

  • Listen in order the first time. Shuffle hides the transitions we spent time on.
  • Read alongside. Many tracks link back to a review or an interview, so the story behind a song is never far away. Our Reviews page is a good companion.
  • Save what surprises you. The point is discovery; follow an artist you did not know and explore their back catalogue.
  • Use decent headphones. Some of the quieter, more detailed recordings reward careful listening.

Older lists and your suggestions

Past selections remain a useful snapshot of what was exciting at a given moment, and you can dig through earlier issues in the Archive. We also welcome tips: if you have heard a local band, a forgotten reissue or a track that belongs next to something we featured, write to us. Some of our favourite additions have come from readers who simply wanted to share a song they could not stop playing.
